JURY

Taking advantage of a largely unbuilt site, this radical proposal for environmental restoration in the heart of the city anticipates a long-term evolution of space into an ecologically productive natural habitat. It suggests a 50-year strategy for boldly applying broad ecological and regional concerns to a specific urban setting.

this is not a park…

fabricating a template for networked berlin wilderness

adding 250 acres of nature

new nature consumes:

overgrown rail yards and hardscapes; fabricates topology, hydrology and biotopes; camouflages architecture with forests, infrastructure with grass and earth; carpets tunnels with sod; shelters threatened flora and fauna; restores managed forests into wilderness; networks nature. Wilderness is no dogs; no paved paths; no sealed land; no motor vehicles; no trimmed trees; no exotics; no pollution*

+ erasing hardscapes

+ networking habitats

+ covering infrastructure

+ restoring forests

= building wilderness in berlin

*wilderness does not currently exist in germany. originally, wildnerness comes from america and is defined as: at least 5,000 acres of land that "in contrast with those areas where man and his own works dominate the landscape, as an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled b man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain… its primeval character and influence," and that should be protected and managed in such a way that it "appears to have been affected primarily by the force of nature" [1965 wilderness act, http://www.wilderness.net/nwps/nwps_define.cfm].
